I woke when we landed and was disorientated for a few moments. The only thing I was aware of was that we were thankfully on the ground, and the engine was no longer humming beneath me, and Emre’s hand was still holding mine. Even in my sleep. Yes, my husband was a complicated man, and every day that passed, the more and more I yearned to know him.

The warm spiced air of Istanbul met my nose as we got out of the plane and down onto the ground that was still hot from a long summer’s day. The last time I’d been here, it had been with friends, and Tessa had been heavily pregnant. I wondered what this time would bring. I was here, in the country of our ancestors, with my husband. An electric sort of excitement filled me, as I followed Emre to the car that was waiting for us. He worked as we drove through the city at night, and I could hardly blame him this time. It sat unsaid between us that he hadn’t done anything on the plane but hold my hand. How could this man think we should just remain strangers, and then act in a way that touched my heart so much?
